One of my hopes is that someday I can do the same for others. Maybe have a dozen Substack subscriptions going. Maybe more. Support people who helped me along the way, and sometimes just help someone who needs a lift.
Chris, I came to a similar conclusion. Early on I told readers I would never put up a paywall. I've stuck to that through the 160+ essays I've published. I want people to read what I've written; why would I prevent them from doing so? On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with paying for a product - as long as the buyer is willing. I'm not poor and would be disingenuous if I claimed otherwise. I also felt uncomfortable asking readers to "support my work." Yet I find myself paying writers like you for that very reason. I've been thinking about this for a long time and have come to something of a compromise with myself: ask for payment and give it all to charity.
