You also need to be more aggressive in attaching yourself to other stacks and promoting on twitter. Rod D Martin does a great job at this .

Explain a bit more. I was proting heavily on Twitter for a bit but the time vs return wasn't there. What do you mean by attaching?

Engaging deeply in others posts , generating clicks just to have people notice your work . Also use shared media between people you agree with to help promote them . I’m not an expert in this field at all but seen those who use guest content and become guests on others content to help spread both sub stacks .

Agreed. I’ve found some of my favorite authors on Substack from intelligent comments and debate posted in the comment section of my other favorite writers. I’d argue that figuring out a way to have a great comment section on your own stack as it grows is a huge benefit in driving engagement. El Gato Malo is a great example of this.
